According to the California Governor, Jerry Brown, young women will have to wait until they are 18 years old until they can get a tan at a tanning salon. It is now a law that young girls under 18 years old are forbidden to get a tan at the tanning salon, and though this has outraged many young women, the Governor has no second thoughts in changing the law. This law will take effect on January 1, 2012.

Even though the state of Texas also enforced a law that 16 year old girls can’t use tanning beds, according to some resources, California is the only state that has set the oldest age limit. However, California and Texas are not the only states that carry age restrictions of tanning bed use, as thirty other countries also have age restrictions.
Have Other Countries Enforced This Law Yet?
Surprisingly, the state of California already enforced a law that young girls under 14 can’t use tanning beds. However, young girls that are in the ages of 15-17 can still use the tanning beds if they have gained approval from their legal guardians or parents. Other states such as Ohio, Rhode Island, Illinois and New York, are also considering to enforce an age limit like the state of California, but haven’t legislated the law yet.
How Does This Law Hurt Tanning Salon Businesses?
According to the Indoor Tanning Association, this law will most definitely ruin tanning salon businesses because over 8% of the customers are either 18 years old or younger. According to many supporters of the law, the age restriction must be enforced, as the skin can damage from the types of radiation that is used in every tanning bed. Little do people know, tanning beds can even lead to melanoma, and surprisingly, melanoma is a kind of skin cancer that happens to be fatal. According to many studies and dermatologists, getting tanned at a tanning salon at a young age can actually increase the chances of getting the specific skin cancer.
How Famous Have Tanning Salons Gotten?
According to other resources, tanning salons are super addictive and have gain such huge popularity in California. Studies have shown that tanning salons in Los Angeles County are super famous that there’s even more tanning salon shops than McDonalds restaurants. The reason to why young girls are constantly wanting to be tanned is because many Hollywood role models are giving bad advice in their songs. Some supporters of the law were outraged at the fact that Pop singer Katy Perry sang about being tan is a cool thing in one of her most famous songs “California Gurls”. Getting tanned may seem like a great way to enhance ones beauty, but in reality, it can really be life threatening.
Although this law has outraged many young women that love tanning beds, California citizens should see it as a good thing. By the Governor enforcing the law, parents and guardians will help their young daughters avoid getting skin cancer. However, not only will this law help young girls stay away from skin cancer, but they will also realize that their natural skin tone should be celebrated than artificial skin colors.
